Recently, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2024 have been released. In these rankings, Malaysia has a total of six universities that successfully made it into the top 500, and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has advanced by an impressive 200 places compared to last year!
This achievement even marks a historic high!
Times Higher Education World University Rankings
The 2024 rankings encompass a total of 1,904 universities from 108 countries and regions around the world. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings (referred to as THE World University Rankings) assess universities based on five categories: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook, using a more comprehensive set of factors to determine the quality of a university.
THE World University Rankings, along with the QS World University Rankings, are widely recognized as authoritative global university rankings, but they tend to be more oriented towards English-speaking Western countries.
Therefore, Malaysia, located in Asia and primarily using Malay as its main language, having six universities enter the top 500 in the 2024 rankings, has truly attracted international attention.
Remarkable Progress by UTM
Compared to its ranking in the 601-800 range in the 2023 rankings, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has moved into the 401-500 range in the 2024 rankings, representing a significant leap forward.
Among the five categories of assessment, UTM's top three are international outlook, research quality, and industry. This underscores that UTM's graduates possess outstanding talents and are making significant contributions to the global job market, whether in academic research or industry sectors.
Phil Baty, Chief Global Affairs Officer at Times Higher Education, noted that Malaysian universities have experienced rapid upward mobility in rankings over the past five years, drawing significant international attention. Malaysian universities also perform above the world average in terms of international outlook.
